Concerning the future of IowaHardcore.com

  • I have really had the chance to respond to any of the emails by people interested in taking over... The more I think about it, I don't want to hand the site over to just one person. What I'd like to do is make it interactive, where various people with passwords can add shows, links, etc instead of counting on just one person to update everything. This will take some work and some time... If you're familiar with php coding and mysql database shit and can offer assistance get in touch. until then I'm not really going to have much computer access or time to update anything... use this message board for posting shows or publicizing whatever you like.

News as of 8-8, lot's of old news included
  • Ten Grand played their final show in Iowa as an Iowa band tonight in Des Moines. They recently finished recording their next record, 'this is the way to rule' and they officially signed with Southern Records near the end of July! Many, many congratulations to these guys! Even though it's sad to see them go, it's about time a lot more people got a taste of Ten Grand. They will now be on tour for probably as long as they can be and after that are planning on settling, most-likely, in Chicago.

  • Meth and Goats have had a 3 song mini-cd for sale for some time. It is the material that will be on their split 7" with Ten Grand and it sounds amazing!

  • Mickey Nolan will also be leaving this fair state, most likely in the fall. He's headed for either Chicago or Alaska. He has been booking shows in Iowa for ages and is probably one of the the most solid people around. I (and i'm sure many other people) wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up.

  • A summary of the Venue situation in Iowa:
-Theta Beta Potata House and Peapody's in Moline have both closed. TBP was shut down by their landlord. I don't know anything about the Peabody's closing.
-The Fallout Shelter is a newer venue in Des Moines located at 243 E. 30th St. Suite#4 Des Moines, IA. I believe it's a collective run by various do-gooders in the various areas of the Des Moines scene, all ages/drug/alcohol/smoking free and pretty much open to the whole spectrum of independent punk/indie rock.
-The Mouse Trap is a house in Iowa City that has been doing some shows, it is also all ages/drug/alcohol/smoking free. 824 E. Burlington St. Iowa City, IA 52240 is the address... They have been having some problems with cops and the city. I'm not exactly sure what is going on but I believe shows are happening as "parties" with bands playing and will only have shows on Fridays and Saturdays. This is run by Matthew Show of Showering Ashes and others.
-Another house in Iowa City is located at 532 South Dodge is planning to start doing shows. I'm not sure how far along they are in getting things going there. Three members of You Just Drive This Thing, Kid. We'll Worry About The Gown. Tyler, the drummer for Modern Life Is War, and a boy named Will live there.

  • 515crew.com has been an awesome resource lately! Everyone should check out this site run by Zach Hoyt and company. With IowaHardcore.com being very un-updated for the past 3 months, 515crew.com has totally stepped up to keep the good word flowing. Adita.org has also been very good at keeping the word moving in Iowa City with the Little Village events calendar...many 'props' or whatever to Brad Adita. Eastern Iowa Punk is a relatively new start-up scene site that can be located at www.easterniowapunk.cjb.com/.

  • Lost Cause has broken up.

Guided by the technical and sonic sound wizardry of Mr. John Svec at Minstrel PZM Studios, the band has created 12 guitar-driven tracks that they will release within the next few months. The band has also been distributing a sampler of the new material at their shows around the Midwest. If you haven't gotten a copy of the sampler, go to altoheceta.com and download the three MP3's from either the news page or the digital playback section.

  • The Senile Citizens broke up some time ago... i guess it was never really announced.

  • Meth and Goats are currently working on a full length record. It is being produced by Ray Malone and was recorded in Los Angeles.

  • The Theta Beta Potata will cease to exsist as of August 1st this summer. Our landlord has not renewed the lease with us, and we will be forced out. There is a the possibility of finding a new space, but it looks grim for independent music in Iowa City right now. To Finish off our 2 year run the Theta House will be having a Fest in June or July. We are urging bands to get in contact, we are trying to make it as huge as possible, with as many well-known bands as possible, it will probably be a long weekend, from thursday-sunday. We also want to offer workshops during the day, so people who have diy skills ie bradley adita are welcome to have a little booth. We at the Potata house would like to thank everyone involved for making our shows a wonderful experience. We hope that we will able to continue the tradition of the theta beta potata house in some shape or form in iowa city in the future.

    -dan maloney, theta beta potata

  • Init Records News-
Once The Vidablue "What I Should Have Said Vol.1" CD sells out, it is being repressed under Ten Grand with new artwork. There's less than 500 copies left...

Two new releases should see the light in June 2002 on Init Records. The first being a LP version of the Forstella Ford "Insincerity Down To An Artform", strictly limited to 300 copies, one time only hand numbered pressing. Seeing as how the CD's are almost out of print for good, the vinyl copies shouldn't last very long. Most likely, this LP will only be available from the band on tour, mailorder, and no more than 2 for distributors/mailorder places.

Caligari has their debut full-length CD available in June.

Other summer releases include a Ten Grand/Meth and Goats split 7", an Il Lust 7", a Mahkato/A.N.D.P. split 7", and the start of a four-7" midwest compilation series (read below)! Beginning this summer, Init Records will unleash a new 7" series under the name of the Midwest Project. The Midwest Project will be a series of four 7" compilations, each devoted to a midwestern state and each 7" will have four unreleased songs by four bands from the respective state. There will be 7"s for Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. Only 500 of each 7" will be pressed, 400 being available immediately and the other 100 of each will be on colored vinyl and collected in a very limited four 7" box set with additional goodies. If the demand for these 7"s becomes overwhelming they may also be collected onto CD for unlimited availablility. If all goes as planned, the first 7" in the series will be available in June. Confirmed bands include: The Blinding Light, Caligari 1919, Mahkato, Il Lust, Preacher Gone To Texas, and Dispensing of False Halos

Many many thanks to Ian of crewcial.org, who now hosts this thing and Adam from Alto Heceta, who some how figured out how to get the host transfer to work. I still haven't set up all the email stuff so I can be reached at mortycore@home.com until this site says otherwise. He also has a huge section of local cds, records, and shirts. It is a shame that a person or persons would break into his store and rob him. • Mike from QC Hardcore: "Well we had the first of a few Peabody's benefits on Saturday (9/29). and It was pretty sad to see how many kids WEREN'T there. It's those same kids that bitch about how "There's nothing to do." Well kids it looks like there won't be very soon unless you show some support for your scene. From the looks of things saturday i don't think more than 25 kids were there. Mickey shouldnt have to waste his time puttin on shows if no one is gonna come. He doesn't even live here! He's doin us a favor and you all just blow it off. This is the reason why we don't have many big time shows. All you kids just wanna see the "good" bands and not our local stuff. Its just as good, if not better. But whatever." ... C'mon, Benefit shows for local venues are important, even if you don't like the bands it's one of those things you should be supporting if you want a place to see shows, period.

  • Save the AIB building!!! Sign the Petition!!! On September 10, 2001, the Des Moines City Council voted, 4 to 2, to reject Tim Urban's development plan for renovation and in the same motion (Item #99) voted to demolish this building (at the approximate total cost to the tax-payers of $700,000), following the City Manager's recommendation, but ignoring the recommendations of the Urban Renewal Board, the Historic Preservation Commission, The Architectural Advisory Committee, and the Plan and Zoning Commission. This was also clearly in opposition to the sentiments of the citizens in the Council Chambers. Located on the corner of 10th & Grand, this 1923 Art Deco building once was home to the American Institute of Business (AIB). This perfectly good building, with a little renovation, can easily last another century or more, but your elected representatives want to turn this architectural gem into a patch of grass for no other reason than "It's not in the plan". There are good reasons why it should be saved... check the link above to read more!

  • There's not much that hasn't been said about the Sept 11 tragedy. I won't waste time soapboxing but I will say i'm saddened by the senseless loss of life and just as scared of the violence that might come in response... either to any citizen of this country that happens to be of arab descent or those innocent people that will likely be killed if 'our' response is indiscriminant bombing. Hopefully we can find ways to help either by donating blood or sending money to help the families of victims, rescue workers, and even those hospitality/service workers displaced and now unemployed due to the attacks. Support Displaced HERE workers. Here are some indie media sources with opinions on the attacks you won't hear from the mainstream media: alternet.org, zmag.org, tompaine.com, michaelmoore.com, infoshop.org, indymedia.org

This year the scope has been expanded to include all underground/independent media, everything from zines and comics to film and low-power fm radio
Nick Bergus and Laura will be will have a table at which we would like to feature projects from Iowa. As long as it has something to do with underground media and Iowa, we are interested. This means send us your zines, videos, flyers for show spaces/art galleries/film fests, T-shirts for your pirate radio station, records, or anything else you can think of! If you plan to be in Ohio, let us know and we'd be happy to let you set up at the table.
We need to have everything in hand by Thursday June 21, so don't forget! Depending upon what you're doing, we might be able to sell anywhere from 10 to 25, maybe more (maybe less.), we're not really sure. If you could write a short description of your project, that would be most helpful, and don't forget to include the price you want us to charge, or tell us it's a freebie. If you send us stuff that you usually charge for them, we will happily send you payment for what was sold and return any unsold after the conference is over.

  • I don't know if this would constitute Iowa Scene news but I think it's close enough. Chris Ternes is a kid that attended Knox College in Galesburg, IL. He started setting up hardcore shows a year or two ago and in that time brought in a whole slew of amazing bands. In addition regional bands like Preacher, EOE, OTBU and a whole mess of others got the opportuniy to play Galesburg. Chris is graduating in the next week or two so last nights' Good Clean Fun, Affront, OTBU, Resinators, Senile Citizens show was the last show that he will do at Knox. For those that never met Chris I have to tell you he's a fucking champ. Chris worked really hard to build a scene in a town that had little or no independent music scene whatsoever. Chris worked hard and put himself on the line on more than one occasion for the sake of a bunch of smelly kids rocking out in a lounge. Chris is headed to Europe for awhile and then on to the Peace Corps )if I'm not mistaken. I just wanted to say thank you to Chris on behalf of OTBU and all the other kids that we've seen at the Knox shows. His contribution will be missed. - Mickey OTBU
