New Order Highlights!
Converge
- "Jane Doe" cd - You know, I was completely expecting disappointment
with this new Converge album. I was let down by the AN split and by the
Krazyfest performance... well to my great surprise this is probably their
best record yet! It's heavier, more technical, more brutal... they've attained
the sort of perfection Cave-In did with "Until Your Heart Stops".
They're pushing their own musical insanity even further yet this doesn't
trail off and become a big mess. Lots of good songs and a 10 minute 'epic'
song ends this album. awesome!!
Pretty
Girls Make Graves cdep - This is what you get when you mix members of
KillSadie, Murder City Devils, Death Wish Kids, and Rapture... awesome Rock
n Roll laden Hardcore with female vocals. It's good stuff, and 4 songs can
only be a preview of even more good stuff to come.
Catharsis
/ Newborn split cd - The brand new recordings from Catharsis (one ten
minute song, "Arsonist's Prayer", especially timely in the wake
of the State murder in Genoa) and Newborn (three hectic, intricate, soulful
songs from this incredible Hungarian band), packaged with the usual creative
(i.e. ripped off) CrimethInc. finesse.
Milemarker
- "Anaesthetic" cd/lp - The new record, and first for new
label Jade Tree. Epic, sprawling songs reflect the glacial and spatial conditions
under which the material was written. Brian McTernan, who recorded Frigid
Forms Sell, played the role of producer yet again, admonishing Milemarker's
over-use of the word "conceptual" and stereo- It's definitely
Milemarker but a less rockin' more electronic Milemarker.
Submission
Hold - "Sackcloth and Ashes" cd/lp - If you were impressed
with "Waiting For Another Monkey To Throw The First Brick" then
this new record will blow you away. The recording is top notch, and it really
manages to capture the power, honesty, and sheer heart of Submission Hold.
These eight songs continue the Submission Hold's blend of political content,
abrasive hardcore, memorable song writing, and awesome vocal power with
even more complex, diverse, and yet very catchy songs; some fantastic material.
The 40 pg booklet once again features art, writings, and lyrics in English,
German, Spanish and French.
Godspeed
You Black Emperor - "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven"
2xlp - We've carried this release for a while. GBYE is almost unanimously
acclaimed for their 9 piece instrumental, ochestral rock composed with harrowing
guitars, plaintive strings, pulsing basses & explosive drums combined
with glockenspiels, horns & tape drones to form an overwhelming palette
of sounds, always driven by fierce melodic momentum & tremendous attention
to dynamics and detail. Godspeed is one of those bands that can convey the
emotional and political without uttering a word. If you still don't have
all their releases I'd say you're really missing out.
Page
Ninety-Nine - Document #8 10"/cd - To be honest I don't know what
to say about this band and I haven't yet even listened to this release.
Pg 99 is an 8 piece hardcore band that fits somewhere between hc, punk,
grind, emo, metal,
noise...
intense and loud. I suppose if you liked their 7 previous records then you'd
probably dig this too. Oh yeah and the 10" comes on yellow vinyl if
you're into that sort of thing!
Don
Caballero - "American Don" cd - Who wants a listening challenge?
Take 3 of the most competent and downright amazing technical musicians and
let them make jazzy instrumental indie rock filled with odd and ever-changing
time signatures. The ultimate "math" band... overwhelming and
confounding yet a very enjoyable listen.
Icarus
Line - "mono" lp - rock n' roll a-la ink and dagger with a
load of sass from those pricks that run Buddyhead. Nice artwork on the sleeve
as well.
Culture
Jam: the uncooling of America by Kalle Lasn - Kalle Lasn, editor of
Adbusters magazine, argues that America is no longer a country, but a multitrillion-dollar
brand. America is no different from McDonalds, Marlboro or General
Motors. Its an image "sold" not only to the citizens of
the U.S.A., but to consumers worldwide. The American brand is associated
with catchwords such as "democracy," "opportunity" and
"freedom." But like cigarettes that are sold as symbols of vitality
and youthful rebellion, the American reality is very different from its
brand image. America has been subverted by corporate agendas. Its
elected officials bow before corporate power as a condition of their survival
in office. A collective sense of powerlessness and disillusionment has set
in. A deeply felt sense of betrayal is brewing.
No Gods
No Masters - Daniel Guerin - This is the first English translation of
Guerin's monumental anthology of Anarchism. It details, through a vast array
of hitherto unpublished documents, writings, letters and reports, the history,
organization and practice of the anarchist movement - its theorists, advocates
and activists.
Book 1 includes the writings of Max Stirner, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Mikhail
Bakunin, James Guillaume, Max Nettlau, Peter Kropotkin, Emma Goldman and
Cesar de Paepe amongst others - traversing through 'The Ego And His Own',
'Property Is Theft', 'God And The State', 'The International Revolutionary
Society Or Brotherhood', the controversy with Marx and the First International,
The Paris Commune, Worker Self-Management, The Jura Federation and more....
Book
2 includes work from the likes of Malatesta, Emile Henry, Emile Pouget,
Augustin Souchy, Gaston Leval, Voline, Nestor Makhno, the Kronstadt sailors,
Luigi Fabbri, Buenaventura Durruti and Emma Goldman - covering such momentous
events as the Anarchist International, French 'propaganda by the deed',
the General Strike, collectivization, The Russian Revolution, the Nabat,
The Insurgent Peasant Army of the Ukraine, the Kronstadt Uprising, and the
Spanish Civil War and Revolution.
Live
From Death Row - Mumia Abu-Jamal - Once a prominent radio reporter,
Mumia Abu-Jamal is now in a Pennsylvania prison awaiting his state-sactioned
execution. In 1982 he was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder
of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner after a trial many have criticized
as profoundly biased. Live From Death Row is a collection of his prison
writingsan impassioned yet unflinching account of the brutalities
and humiliations of prison life. It is also a scathing indictment of racism
and political bias in the American judicial system that is certain to fuel
the controversy surrounding the death penalty and freedom of speech.
The
Faint - Danse Macabre cd/lp - hot hot hot! It seems these Omaha new-wave
revival dudes are getting a lot of recognition recently from the mainstream.
This is their follow-up to 'Blank-Wave Arcade'. If you're into them you'll
probably really like this... if not then you're just not a new, new-waver
or something?
Shipping
News - Very Soon, And in Pleasant Company - Closest thing to a Rodan
re-union. Jeff Mueller (June of 44) and Jason Noble (Rachel's) get together
to explore more nautical sagas. Seven tracks. Shipping News return with
sophomore album. More dynamics, more heartwrenching, more everything basically.
Drowningman
- "Still Loves You" cdep - Exactly what you'd expect... chaotic/
technical metal riffage, dark sassy sarcasam, screamed vocals and a heavy
dose of melody. We've sold out of 4 copies of this before we could ever
get it listed up here!
Harkonen
- "The Grizz" 7" I've been really curious about these
guys for a long time because of the relation to Botch. This is their new
7" on Hydrahead and it's awesome. Imagine a more driving bass oriented
Botch or a more mathy Jesus Lizard. Highly recomended. We finally have
more!!
Countdown
To Putsch - "Ideas For the Living And Willing To Act" cd +
100 page book - Countdown To Putsch raises the bar with regards to record
"inserts" by putting together a 100 page book meets CD release.
The seventy-two minute CD features fifteen new Countdown To Putsch songs
as well as a lecture by feminist Susan Brownmiller. While the book does
feature lyrics, it is far, far more than that. The three Putsch members
have written and designed a book of lyrics, political essays, stories, interviews,
parodies, and social commentary. It looks wonderful with a nice concise
design and a plethora of photos. Musically,
Countdown To Putsch is exploring a fusion of jazz and hardcore, and conceptually
they are pushing the boundaries of what it means to be in a band. More than
a band, Putsch is a group of artists trying to express their political ideology
via music, image, and text.
Evasion
by CrimethInc - A 288 page novel-like narrative, Evasion is one person's
travelogue of thievery and trespassing across the country, evading not only
arrest, but also the 40-hour workweek and hopeless boredom of modern life.
The journey documents a literal and metaphorical reclamation of an individual's
life and the spaces surrounding themscamming, squatting, dumpstering,
train hopping and shoplifting a life worth living and a world worth the
fighting for. Sold Out For Now!
Soophie
Nun Squad - "The Devil, The Metal, The Big Booty Beats" Soophie
create one of the most unique, energetic, fun, and liberating show experiences
around. Imagine about 13 people getting everyone smiling and participating,
singing and dancing. This album is a preview of what can only be experienced
live. Take no prisoners, fight!
The
Vidablue - "Our Miracle Point of Contact" You should all be
beaming with pride that one of the finest bands around today is Iowan. The
VB rock in an almost undescribable way...some where between hardcore, indierock,
emo, and jazz sits the amazing Vidablue. You should all own this and be
saving your allowance for the newest record which is almost out!
Fortunate
Son by J.H. Hatfield - The original publisher of this book recalled
it and Soft Skull Press has re-published it. We found it in a dumpster.
This is a controversial biography of President G.W. Bush. It discusses abuse
of privalege, his cocaine habit, and numerous scandalous dealings.
Shellac
- "At Action Park" lp - This is Shellac's first lp... and
still arguably their best. This is one of the most abrasive bands in existence...
the guitars sound literally like metal on metal amplified way too much to
be healthy. Stripped down and very solid, driving rhythm section. Funny,
smart-ass indie rock at its finest. Kiss my black ass!
Swans
- "Filth/Body to Body, Job to Job" 2xcd - A re-issue of SWANS
seminal era with a previously unreleased version of "Raping A Slave",
recorded live in Berlin, 1984 as well as unreleased versions of "Strip
/ Burn", "HeatSheet", "Blackout", "Clay Man"
and "Weakling". A must-have for anyone interested in the earlier
sledge-hammer sound that made SWANS one of the most influential post-punk
projects of the 80s.
